Extended timeline for Class C & D device import licence renewals
CDSCO has extended the renewal window for import licences of Class C and D devices from 6 months to 9 months before expiry, easing the documentation backlog at zonal offices.
Import licence renewal applications (Form MD-15) can now be filed up to 9 months before expiry, and licences remain valid during pendency if filed at least 3 months prior.

If your import licence expires within 12 months, file renewal at least 3 months before expiry to retain deemed-validity protection.
Field safety alert: recall of specific syringe-pump battery lot (non-Indian OEM)
A voluntary recall has been issued for battery packs in certain imported syringe pumps (lot series BX-2024-Q3) due to overheating risk. Indian distributors must trace and replace affected units.
Distributors and hospitals using the affected lot must quarantine devices and request replacement battery packs from the importer.
Hospitals and distributors of imported syringe pumps purchased between Aug 2024 and Jan 2025.

Mandatory UDI labelling for Class C/D devices from 1 January 2027
Unique Device Identification (UDI) labelling becomes mandatory for all Class C and D medical devices manufactured or imported after 1 January 2027. Class A/B follow in 2028.
Every device unit must carry a UDI-DI and UDI-PI compliant barcode; manufacturers must register identifiers in the national UDI database before market release.

Draft guidance on AI/ML-based medical device software released for comment
CDSCO has published draft guidance covering registration expectations for AI/ML-enabled medical device software (SaMD), including interpretation aids in ECG and imaging.
Draft defines documentation for training data provenance, performance claims and post-market surveillance of adaptive algorithms. Public comments open for 60 days.

State licensing authorities to accept online-only Form MD-42 for wholesale licences
Wholesale licence applications (Form MD-42) move to online-only submission through the National Single Window System in all states from next quarter.
Physical submissions will no longer be accepted; existing paper applications in process remain valid.
